Manuscript This manuscript, a book of hours of the late thirteenth century, is composed of 87 full-page illuminations in gold of 24Kltsque illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and the saints. The book is a calendar of the Cistercian Church in Latin. Each image has a brief epigraph. When it was created, the codex had 90 illuminations. The manuscript, a masterpiece of Gothic lighting, shows how important religious images were for the devotions of their owner. Most likely it was a rich lay woman, perhaps Marie de Rethel, Madame de Enghien (circa 1231-1315), who lived in Mons, in Hainaut County and the diocese of Cambrai. Another owner may have been Marie de Gavre, a Cistercian from Wauthier-Braine, near Nivelles, also in the diocese of Cambrai. The paintings belong to two artists: the teacher Henri and a painter who, although anonymous, had a greater participation in the work and made the most beautiful illustrations. The style of the illuminations shows influences of the artistic traditions of France, England and the Holy Roman Empire. The presence of local saints, such as Gertrudis de Nivelles (626-659), Valdetrudis (deceased circa 688) and Lambert, among others, links the manuscript to the diocese of Cambrai.
