José Benítez Montilla was born in Antequera, province of Málaga, in the year 1963 and since then his life has been linked to art. With a completely self-taught background, Benítez has dedicated his personal history to exploring the various pictorial forms to become the renowned artist he is today. As the same says "late twenty years until I took the leap to expose", but since he did it has built a reputation that has led him to expose more than 30 times, mainly in Catalonia, but also in Andalusia, participating together with ten other artists in the last Noche en Blanco malagueña, and in February of this year in the Galería Cartel with the exhibition 'Dos visiones del Barroco' together with Jesús Romero Benítez.

Despite the fact that José Benítez affirms that he is lucky enough to "practically live off my paintings, which is not easy", he also recognizes that no one is a prophet in his land, so most of his work is in Catalonia in the hands of private collectors "who are those who are driving the artistic landscape." For Benítez, the commitment to the thrust of culture in a large part of the community "remains only on the facade, it must go further and support local creators who have their own style that does not conform to fashions".

In fact, the style of Benítez has been changing throughout its different stages, being his current stamp of identity have virtually renounced color in his works. Works that not only cover the painting but also this artist has approached the sculpture and the installations. "I think that having my own language has sometimes slowed my career, but it is something that I can not give up, and in the end, being authentic is what has made my work recognized and appreciated," he says. Based in Malaga, Benítez is currently preparing a large exhibition in Cáceres, with 40 near works, which will see the light next year.
