Sculptural relief based on the work of the Renaissance painter "Rafael". This work is a fresco from the Estancia de la Signature of the Vatican, (the name derives from when the decorative works were completed, in 1511, it was used for the seat of the court of the signature gratiae or signature of grace.)
The three female figures, seated on a plinth, represent the theme of the cardinal virtues: The Fortress with a helmet and an oak branch alluding to the surname of Julius II; Prudence dressed in white and contemplating herself in a mirror and Temperance holding the reins.
The cardinal virtues would be four, the fourth does not appear in this relief, the painter placed it in the medallion of the vault of said room because according to Plato's doctrine, collected by Saint Augustine, Justice would be superior to the others in hierarchy.
The graceful cupids that give harmony and graceful movement to the composition, personify the theological virtues. Charity is represented by the cupid that collects the fruits of the branch of the Fortress; Hope would be represented by the one who holds its emblem, the torch; the third pointing to the sky symbolizes Faith.
