This drawing represents an experiment with the image of Saint George in a postmodern style. The commitment to the academic tradition does not constrain from experimenting with composition, lighting, and topics. There is always a window for a postmodern interpretation of traditional subjects.
This drawing represents an experiment with the image of Saint George. The scene of killing the dragon with a lance has numerous representations in art around the world. The legend of Saint George occupies an important place in the Christian culture. The story has its similarities with other legends: the Mesopotamian legend of Marduk and Tiamat and the Greek myth of Perseus and Medusa, among others. Being popular in the Byzantine cultural tradition, it began to occupy an important place in the Catholic culture with the Crusades and passed further to the Renaissance. Since the XIVth century, the day of Saint George - Sant Jordi, who is also known to be the protector of lovers - is celebrated every April 23 in Catalonia, Spain. It is marked with roses and books as symbols of love and culture, being merged with the anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes and Shakespeare's deaths. So, the cult of San Jordi has changed through time, although it is equally inspiring.
